RESUMO

Multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) is a rare fundus disease, characterized by acute vision loss and visual field defects. Many previous studies have explained the possible pathogenesis and clinical features of primary MEWDS. However, as the number of reported cases increases, secondary MEWDS occurs in other related retinal diseases and injuries, exhibiting some special characteristics. The associated retinal diseases include multifocal choroiditis/punctate inner choroidopathy (MFC/PIC), acute zonal occult outer retinopathy, best vitelliform macular dystrophy, pseudoxanthoma elasticum, and ocular toxoplasmosis. The related retinal injury is laser photocoagulation, surgery, and trauma. Although primary MEWDS often have a self-limiting course, secondary MEWDS may require treatment in some cases, according to the severity of concomitant diseases and complications. Notably, MEWDS secondary to MFC/PIC that is prone to forming choroidal neovascularization and focal choroidal excavation, needs positive treatment with corticosteroids. The possible underlying pathogenesis of secondary MEWDS is the exposure of choroidal antigen after the disruption of Bruch's membrane. The MEWDS-related features in secondary MEWDS are still evanescent under most circumstances. Its prognosis and treatment depend on the severity of complications. Current studies propose that the etiology is associated with immune factors, including viral infection, inflammation in choroid and Bruch's membrane, and antigen exposure caused by retinal and/or choroidal insults. More pathogenic studies should be conducted in the future. Accurate diagnosis for secondary MEWDS could benefit patients in aspects of management and prognosis.

PURPOSE: Currently, body weight-based dosing of rifampicin is recommended. But lately, fat-free mass (FFM) was reported to be superior to body weight (BW). The present evaluation aimed to assess the influence of body mass-related covariates on rifampicin's pharmacokinetics (PK) parameters in more detail using non-linear mixed effects modeling (NLMEM). METHODS: Twenty-four healthy Caucasian volunteers were enrolled in a bioequivalence study, each receiving a test and a reference tablet of 600 mg of rifampicin separated by a wash-out period of at least 9 days. Monolix version 2023R1 was used for NLMEM. Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) were performed to visualize the relationship of body size descriptors to the exposure to rifampicin. RESULTS: A one-compartment model with nonlinear (Michaelis-Menten) elimination and zero-order absorption kinetics with a lag time best described the data. The covariate model including fat-free mass (FFM) on volume of distribution (V/F) and on maximum elimination rate (Vmax/F) lowered the objective function value (OFV) by 56.4. The second-best covariate model of sex on V/F and Vmax/F and BW on V/F reduced the OFV by 51.2. The decrease in unexplained inter-individual variability on Vmax/F in both covariate models was similar. For a given dose, MCS showed lower exposure to rifampicin with higher FFM and accordingly in males compared to females with the same BW and body height. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that beyond BW, body composition as reflected by FFM could also be relevant for optimized dosing of rifampicin. This assumption needs to be studied further in patients treated with rifampicin.

The interaction between auxin and cytokinin is important in many aspects of plant development. Experimental measurements of both auxin and cytokinin concentration and reporter gene expression clearly show the coexistence of auxin and cytokinin concentration patterning in Arabidopsis root development. However, in the context of crosstalk among auxin, cytokinin, and ethylene, little is known about how auxin and cytokinin concentration patterns simultaneously emerge and how they regulate each other in the Arabidopsis root. This work utilizes a wide range of experimental observations to propose a mechanism for simultaneous patterning of auxin and cytokinin concentrations. In addition to revealing the regulatory relationships between auxin and cytokinin, this mechanism shows that ethylene signaling is an important factor in achieving simultaneous auxin and cytokinin patterning, while also predicting other experimental observations. Combining the mechanism with a realistic in silico root model reproduces experimental observations of both auxin and cytokinin patterning. Predictions made by the mechanism can be compared with a variety of experimental observations, including those obtained by our group and other independent experiments reported by other groups. Examples of these predictions include patterning of auxin biosynthesis rate, changes in PIN1 and PIN2 patterns in pin3,4,7 mutants, changes in cytokinin patterning in the pls mutant, PLS patterning, and various trends in different mutants. This research reveals a plausible mechanism for simultaneous patterning of auxin and cytokinin concentrations in Arabidopsis root development and suggests a key role for ethylene pattern integration.

PURPOSE: Adefovir (as dipivoxil) was selected as a probe drug in a previous transporter cocktail phenotyping study to assess renal organic anion transporter 1 (OAT1), with renal clearance (CLR) as the primary parameter describing renal elimination. An approximately 20% higher systemic exposure of adefovir was observed when combined with other cocktail components (metformin, sitagliptin, pitavastatin, and digoxin) compared to sole administration. The present evaluation applied a population pharmacokinetic (popPK) modeling approach to describe adefovir pharmacokinetics as a cocktail component in more detail. METHODS: Data from 24 healthy subjects were reanalyzed. After establishing a base model, covariate effects, including the impact of co-administered drugs, were assessed using forward inclusion then backward elimination. RESULTS: A one-compartment model with first-order absorption (including lag time) and a combination of nonlinear renal and linear nonrenal elimination best described the data. A significantly higher apparent bioavailability (73.6% vs. 59.0%) and a lower apparent absorption rate constant (2.29 h-1 vs. 5.18 h-1) were identified in the combined period compared to the sole administration period, while no difference was seen in renal elimination. The population estimate for the Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) of the nonlinear renal elimination was 170 nmol/L, exceeding the observed range of adefovir plasma maximum concentration, while the maximum rate (Vmax) of nonlinear renal elimination was 2.40 µmol/h at the median absolute estimated glomerular filtration rate of 105 mL/min. CONCLUSION: The popPK modeling approach indicated that the co-administration primarily affected the apparent absorption and/or prodrug conversion of adefovir dipivoxil, resulting in the minor drug-drug interaction observed for adefovir as a victim. However, renal elimination remained unaffected. The high Km value suggests that assessing renal OAT1 activity by CLR has no relevant misspecification error with the cocktail doses used.

Background: Bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells [also called MSC(M)] and their extracellular vesicles (EVs) are considered a potentially innovative form of therapy for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Nevertheless, their application to TBI particularly remains preclinical, and the effects of these cells remain unclear and controversial. Therefore, an updated meta-analysis of preclinical studies is necessary to assess the effectiveness of MSC(M) and MSC(M) derived EVs in clinical trials. Methods: The following databases were searched (to December 2022): PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. In this study, we measured functional outcomes based on the modified neurological severity score (mNSS), cognitive outcomes based on the Morris water maze (MWM), and histopathological outcomes based on lesion volume. A random effects meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of mNSS, MWM, and lesion volume. Results: A total of 2163 unique records were identified from our search, with Fifty-five full-text articles satisfying inclusion criteria. A mean score of 5.75 was assigned to the studies' quality scores, ranging from 4 to 7. MSC(M) and MSC(M) derived EVs had an overall positive effect on the mNSS score and MWM with SMDs -2.57 (95 % CI -3.26; -1.88; p < 0.01) and - 2.98 (95 % CI -4.21; -1.70; p < 0.01), respectively. As well, MSC(M) derived EVs were effective in reducing lesion volume by an SMD of - 0.80 (95 % CI -1.20; -0.40; p < 0.01). It was observed that there was significant variation among the studies, but further analyses could not determine the cause of this heterogeneity. Conclusions: MSC(M) and MSC(M) derived EVs are promising treatments for TBI in pre-clinical studies, and translation to the clinical domain appears warranted. Besides, large-scale trials in animals and humans are required to support further research due to the limited sample size of MSC(M) derived EVs.

RESUMO

Wilson disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism. The clinical manifestations of WD are complex and variable, with Kayser-Fleischer ring (K-F ring) and the sunflower cataract being the most common ocular findings. Visual impairment is rare in patients with WD. We report the case of a 17-year-old female with bilateral optic atrophy associated with WD and summarize the clinical features of previously reported cases of optic neuropathy in WD, Clinicians should be aware that WD is a rare cause of optic neuropathy and that optic neuropathy in patients with WD may need to be recognized and screened.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), recognized as a chronic liver condition, has emerged as one of the most prevalent worldwide. This study explores the impact of artesunate (ART) on lipid accumulation and inflammatory factors within NAFLD model cells. METHODS: LO2 cells were subjected to treatment with oleic acid (OA) to establish NAFLD cell model. Subsequently, these cells were categorized into distinct groups: a control group, an OA group, an OA + 2.5 µm ART group, and an OA + 5 µm ART group. The activity of LO2 cells was determined using the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) method. The presence of intracellular lipid droplets was examined through oil red O staining. Levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were evaluated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Additionally, the protein expressions of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD), leucine-rich repeat (LRR), and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), Cleaved caspase-1, N-terminus of Gasdermin-D (GSDMD-N), and apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase activation and recruitment domain (ASC) were measured via Western blot assay. RESULTS: In comparison to the control group, the OA group exhibited a significant increase in the contents of lipid droplets, TC, and TG (p < 0.01). Notably, ART effectively reversed the impact of OA (p < 0.01). Following OA stimulation, there was a pronounced elevation in the levels of IL-6 (p < 0.01), IL-1ß (p < 0.01), and TNF-α (p < 0.05). In comparison to the OA group, the 2.5 µm ART group showed no significant difference in TNF-α content (p > 0.05), while the 5 µm ART group significantly reduced TNF-α content (p < 0.05). Furthermore, both the 2.5 µm ART (p < 0.05) and 5 µm ART (p < 0.01) groups notably reduced IL-1ß and IL-6 content. When compared to the control group, the expressions of NLRP3, ASC, GSDMD-N, and Cleaved caspase-1 in the OA group significantly increased (p < 0.01). ART, however, mitigated this heightened expression trend (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: ART demonstrated a reduction in TC and TG content, improvement in the deposit of intracellular lipid droplets, and a decrease in the release of inflammatory factors in LO2 cells. This effect was achieved through the regulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, presenting a novel approach to the treatment of NAFLD.

PURPOSE: Optic neuritis (ON), a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, is often a precursor manifestation of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) or multiple sclerosis (MS). Reduced corneal nerve fiber counts have been found in patients with NMOSD or MS. This study aimed to observe and compare the corneal subbasal nerve plexus in patients with three types of ON and controls without ON using in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM). METHODS: Data were analyzed for 77 eyes of 48 patients with ON, grouped according to seropositivity for anti-aquaporin-4 IgG, myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody, or no seropositivity, and 35 healthy eyes in the control group. Corneal parameters were quantified based on IVCM images. Visual function indicators were recorded, following which their correlations with IVCM parameters were analyzed. RESULTS: Significant differences in IVCM parameters were detected among the different groups. Reductions in corneal nerve fiber counts were negatively correlated with visual acuity. Corneal nerve fibers were significantly more damaged in the affected eye than in the unaffected eye in patients with ON. CONCLUSION: IVCM revealed corneal nerve fiber loss of varying degrees, depending on the type of ON. This indicates that, although ON primarily affects the central nervous system, peripheral nerves, such as the trigeminal nerve, which innervates the corneal subbasal nerve plexus may also be damaged in affected patients.

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheters are widely used in clinical practice, and the incidence of central venous catheter occlusion is between 25 % and 38 %. The turbulence caused by the pulsatile flushing technique is harmful to the vascular endothelium and may lead to phlebitis. The low-speed continuous infusion catheter technique is a new type of continuous infusion that ensures that the catheter is always in a keep-vein-open state by continuous low-speed flushing; hence, avoiding the problem of catheter occlusion. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of the low-speed continuous infusion catheter technique and the routine care of double-lumen central venous catheters. DESIGN: This was a prospective, randomized, controlled, open-label trial. SETTING: Patients were recruited from 14 medical institutions in China between February and June 2023. PARTICIPANTS: In total, 251 patients were recruited, with 125 in the intervention group and 126 in the control group. METHODS: Patients who used double-lumen central venous catheters for infusion treatment were selected, and those who met the sampling criteria were randomly divided into intervention and control groups using the random envelope method. The intervention group used the low-speed continuous infusion catheter technique to maintain catheter patency, whereas the control group used routine care with a trial period of 7 days. The primary outcome was the occlusion rate. The secondary outcomes included nursing satisfaction and complication rates of the two groups. RESULTS: After 7 days, the rate of catheter occlusion was 28.0 % (35/125, 95 % confidence interval (CI):0.203, 0.367) in the intervention group and 53.97 % (68/126, 95 % CI: 0.449-0.629) in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (χ2 = 17.488, p < 0.001); at 3 days of intervention, the rate of catheter blockage was 8.0 % (10/125, 95 % CI: 0.039-0.142) in the intervention group and 23.8 % (30/126, 0.167-0.322) in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (χ2 = 11.707, p < 0.001). Nurse satisfaction was significantly higher in the intervention group (115/125, 92.0 %, 95 % CI: 0.858-0.961) than in the control group (104/126, 82.54 %, 95 % CI: 0.748-0.887) (χ2 = 5.049, p = 0.025). There were no statistically significant complication rates in either group (p = 0.622). CONCLUSION: The low-speed continuous infusion catheter technique helps maintain catheter patency, improves nurse satisfaction, and provides a high level of safety. BACKGROUND: Multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS)-like features is a rare condition triggered by a macular disease or iatrogenic injury, exhibiting MEWDS changes in the fundus. This study aims to describe the multimodal imaging features and outcomes of multifocal choroiditis/punctate inner choroidopathy (MFC/PIC) lesions with MEWDS-like features. METHODS: Six cases were studied retrospectively. All cases were given regional and oral corticosteroids. RESULTS: All cases showed an isolated juxtafoveal yellowish-white MFC/PIC lesion with disruption of RPE-Bruch's membrane-choriocapillaris complex (RPE-BM-CC), subretinal hyperreflective materials and choroidal thickening on optical coherence tomography. Two weeks after presentation, the grayish-white dots disappeared spontaneously and the corticosteroids were given. After four weeks, the ellipsoid zone (EZ) around the lesion and hyper-autofluorescence resolved. After 13 weeks, five cases showed shrinkage of the juxtafoveal lesion and restoration of foveal EZ. After six months, the juxtafoveal lesion became pigmented. Only one case developed type 2 choroidal neovascularization. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical course of MEWDS-like manifestations is still evanescent in our cases. The yellowish-white juxtafoveal MFC/PIC lesions with disruption of RPE-BM-CC and choroidal thickening showed a well-controlled prognosis after corticosteroid treatment.

Continuous electroencephalogram (cEEG) plays a crucial role in monitoring and postoperative evaluation of critical patients with extensive EEG abnormalities. Recently, the temporal variability of dynamic resting-state functional connectivity has emerged as a novel approach to understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying diseases. However, little is known about the underlying temporal variability of functional connections in critical patients admitted to neurology intensive care unit (NICU). Furthermore, considering the emerging field of network physiology that emphasizes the integrated nature of human organisms, we hypothesize that this temporal variability in brain activity may be potentially linked to other physiological functions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate network variability using fuzzy entropy in 24-hour dynamic resting-state networks of critical patients in NICU, with an emphasis on exploring spatial topology changes over time. Our findings revealed both atypical flexible and robust architectures in critical patients. Specifically, the former exhibited denser functional connectivity across the left frontal and left parietal lobes, while the latter showed predominantly short-range connections within anterior regions. These patterns of network variability deviating from normality may underlie the altered network integrity leading to loss of consciousness and cognitive impairment observed in these patients. Additionally, we explored changes in 24-hour network properties and found simultaneous decreases in brain efficiency, heart rate, and blood pressure between approximately 1 pm and 5 pm. Moreover, we observed a close relationship between temporal variability of resting-state network properties and other physiological indicators including heart rate as well as liver and kidney function. These findings suggest that the application of a temporal variability-based cEEG analysis method offers valuable insights into underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of critical patients in NICU, and may present novel avenues for their condition monitoring, intervention, and treatment.

Chinese fir is an extremely important economic tree species in southern China. In recent years, 74.5% of Chinese fir saplings suffered from shoot blight in Shunchang County, Nanping City, Fujian Province, China. Seventeen isolates were collected from rotten shoots, and their pathogenicity was confirmed following Koch's postulates. The five pathogenic isolates were identified as belonging to the genus Bipolaris based on morphological characteristics, including septate and geniculate conidiophores, smooth to slightly verruculose conidiogenous nodes, dematiaceous phragmospore conidia, oblong or fusiform conidia, and slightly protruding or truncate hilum on conidia, but the number of pseudosepta (3 to 11, mostly 5 to 8) and the size of conidia ([22.81 to 116.13] × [9.16 to 26.58] µm) are different from those of the known species of Bipolaris. A phylogenetic analysis based on ITS, GAPDH, and Tef1-α sequences determined that the five strains belong to a new species of Bipolaris, and the name Bipolaris fujianensis sp. nov. is proposed. The fungicide sensitivity of the pathogen strain Cfsb3 was further evaluated using eight fungicides. Flusilazole, difenoconazole, tebuconazole, and propiconazole exhibited high toxicity to Cfsb3, and the effective concentration inhibiting 50% (EC50) of mycelial growth was 0.08, 0.20, 0.34, and 0.36 µg/ml, respectively, for these four fungicides. Flusilazole, difenoconazole, and iprodione inhibited B. fujianensis by 100% on detached Chinese fir shoots at their recommended concentrations, but azoxystrobin and thiram were ineffective. In conclusion, this study reported an emerging pathogen of Chinese fir sapling shoot blight and proposed triazole and dicarboximide fungicides for disease control.

Working memory, which is foundational to higher cognitive function, is the "sketchpad of volitional control." Successful working memory is the inevitable outcome of the individual's active control and manipulation of thoughts and turning them into internal goals during which the causal brain processes information in real time. However, little is known about the dynamic causality among distributed brain regions behind thought control that underpins successful working memory. In our present study, given that correct responses and incorrect ones did not differ in either contralateral delay activity or alpha suppression, further rooting on the high-temporal-resolution EEG time-varying directed network analysis, we revealed that successful working memory depended on both much stronger top-down connections from the frontal to the temporal lobe and bottom-up linkages from the occipital to the temporal lobe, during the early maintenance period, as well as top-down flows from the frontal lobe to the central areas as the delay behavior approached. Additionally, the correlation between behavioral performance and casual interactions increased over time, especially as memory-guided delayed behavior approached. Notably, when using the network metrics as features, time-resolved multiple linear regression of overall behavioral accuracy was exactly achieved as delayed behavior approached. These results indicate that accurate memory depends on dynamic switching of causal network connections and shifting to more task-related patterns during which the appropriate intervention may help enhance memory.

BACKGROUNDS: Blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) significantly induces neurological impairment. Previous studies showed that HDAC6 knockdown or TubA can protect the TNF-induced endothelial dysfunction. However, the role of HDAC6 inhibition on ICH-induced BBB disruption remains unknown. METHODS: Hemin-induced human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) and collagenase-induced rats were employed to investigated the underlying impact of the HDAC6 inhibition in BBB lesion and neuronal dysfunction after ICH. RESULTS: We found a significant decrease in acetylated α-tubulin during early phase of ICH. Both 25 or 40 mg/kg of TubA could relieve neurological deficits, perihematomal cell apoptosis, and ipsilateral brain edema in ICH animal model. TubA or specific siRNA of HDAC6 inhibited apoptosis and reduced the endothelial permeability of HBMECs. HDAC6 inhibition rescued the degradation of TJ proteins and repaired TJs collapses after ICH induction. Finally, the results suggested that the protective effects on BBB after ICH induction were exerted via upregulating the acetylated α-tubulin and reducing stress fiber formation. CONCLUSIONS: Inhibition of HDAC6 expression showed beneficial effects against BBB disruption after experimental ICH, which suggested that HDAC6 could be a novel and promising target for ICH treatment.

The plant genome produces an extremely large collection of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) that are generally expressed in a context-specific manner and have pivotal roles in regulation of diverse biological processes. Here, we mapped the transcriptional heterogeneity of lncRNAs and their associated gene regulatory networks at single-cell resolution. We generated a comprehensive cell atlas at the whole-organism level by integrative analysis of 28 published single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) datasets from juvenile Arabidopsis seedlings. We then provided an in-depth analysis of cell-type-related lncRNA signatures that show expression patterns consistent with canonical protein-coding gene markers. We further demonstrated that the cell-type-specific expression of lncRNAs largely explains their tissue specificity. In addition, we predicted gene regulatory networks on the basis of motif enrichment and co-expression analysis of lncRNAs and mRNAs, and we identified putative transcription factors orchestrating cell-type-specific expression of lncRNAs. The analysis results are available at the single-cell-based plant lncRNA atlas database (scPLAD; https://biobigdata.nju.edu.cn/scPLAD/). Overall, this work demonstrates the power of integrative single-cell data analysis applied to plant lncRNA biology and provides fundamental insights into lncRNA expression specificity and associated gene regulation.

BACKGROUND: 48, XXYY syndrome is a rare sex chromosome aneuploidy with severe systemic features. Ophthalmic manifestation of 48, XXYY syndrome include hypertelorism, epicanthic folds, hooded eye lids, strabismus, retinitis pigmentosa and Duane's syndrome. CASE: We present mild foveal hypoplasia in a 12-year-old boy with 48, XXYY syndrome using swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The boy was referred for assessment of strabismus and poor visual acuity. OCT revealed persistence of inner retinal layers, and thinning of the outer nuclear layer in the perifoveal region with thickening of the outer plexiform layer. OCTA revealed increased vessel density with reduced foveal avascular zone. CONCLUSION: We described novel OCT and OCTA features of bilateral foveal hypoplasia and reduction of FAZ in a case of 48, XXYY syndrome based on detailed clinical observation and thorough genetic testing. This case expanded the current literature of this rare sex chromosome abnormality and suggest the importance of retinal examinations in 48, XXYY syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Calcium oxalate (CaOx) is the most prevalent and widespread biomineral in plants and is involved in protective and/or defensive functions against abiotic stress factors. It is, however, expected that this function has an extremely significant contribution to growth processes in plants bearing large amounts of CaOx, such as cacti growing in desert environment. RESULTS: In our research, small-sized CaOx crystals (≤ 20 µm) with tetrahedral or spherical shapes were observed to dominate in each epidermal and cortical cell from the tubercles of Mammillaria schumannii, a species from the Cereoideae subfamily, having tubercles (main photosynthetic organs) united with adjacent ones almost into ridges on its stem. Because they have potential significant functions, differential centrifugations after mechanical blending were used to obtain these small-sized CaOx crystals, which extremely tend to adhere to tissue or suspend in solution. And then the combined Scanning Electron Microscope Energy Dispersive System (SEM-EDS) and Raman spectroscopy were further performed to demonstrate that the extracted crystals were mainly CaC2O4·2H2O. Interestingly, spherical druses had 2 obvious abnormal Raman spectroscopy peaks of -CH and -OH at 2947 and 3290 cm-1, respectively, which may be attributed to the occluded organic matrix. The organic matrix was further extracted from spherical crystals, which could be polysaccharide, flavone, or lipid compounds on the basis of Raman spectroscopy bands at 2650, 2720, 2770, and 2958 cm-1. CONCLUSIONS: Here we used a highlightedly improved method to effectively isolate small-sized CaOx crystals dominating in the epidermal and cortical cells from tubercles of Mammillaria schumannii, which extremely tended to adhere plant tissues or suspend in isolation solution. And then we further clarified the organic matrix getting involved in the formation of CaOx crystals. This improved method for isolating and characterizing biomineral crystals can be helpful to understand how CaOx crystals in cacti function against harsh environments such as strong light, high and cold temperature, and aridity.
